The first church was built in Santa Fe in 1610 right on the spot where the Cathedral sits today.  The original adobe church was replaced in 1630 by a larger one, which was later destroyed by the Pueblo Indian Revolt of 1680.   The church was finally rebuilt in 1714 and was named in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Santa Fe.

In 1850, Santa Fe’s first Bishop, Father John Baptiste Lamy of France, decided the old adobe church was inadequate for the seat of the Archdiocese.  He then ordered a new Romanesque church built and brought French architects and Italian stonemasons to build his Cathedral.  The new cathedral was built around the original adobe church and when the new walls of the Cathedral were complete, the old church was torn down and removed through the front door.

All during the month of April, the Lensic will be offering many forms of entertainment for the whole family.  Beginning April 7, 2012, the Lensic will be presenting The Met:  Live in HD Manon at 10:00 a.m. and an encore production at 6:00 p.m.  A beautiful opera presentation right here in the scenic mountain city of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The following week, the Juan Siddi Flamenco Theatre Company will be on stage, Tuesday, April 10, 2012, beginning at 7:30 p.m.  Artistic Director, choreographer and principal dancer, Juan Siddi, will be joined by several of Spain’s world-class artists of today.  Female dancers will interpret Siddi’s choreographies to traditional and original musical scores.  The Juan Siddi Flamenco Theatre Company is one of the top flamenco companies in the United States and the Lensic in Santa Fe is so privileged to be able to present them to you.
