The Palace of the Governors. Situated in Santa Fe Plaza, the Palace of the Governors is America’s oldest public building. Built in the early 1600s, the one-story adobe structure was the territorial capital and governor's residence during the Spanish and Mexican regimes. St. Francis Cathedral. In 1869, this French Romanesque cathedral was commissioned. Fifteen years later, it was finally finished. Maintained by the archdiocese of Santa Fe, St. Francis Cathedral houses many religious relics, including the oldest Madonna in the country.
